Unexpected Angles
This is one of my earliest experiments in portraiture, from when I was a member of the mid-Wales and Herefordshire-based Border Camera club. The title was dictated for a monthly competition, and while I had previously only entered landscapes, I suddenly had an idea that I could construct a whole story through a self-portrait that would inevitably be more interesting. The character is called Bentley Crooker, and he is seen in his office at Pro-Tractor Farming Supplies. I constructed the crooked artefacts in different ways, and assembled the whole set in a garage. The liquid in the glass is in fact jelly and the door in the background is projected onto a sheet from a slide of a model that I made out of card. After this I vowed to submit a self-portrait every month. 2003.
