Grounds of Lost Hall
When I made this photograph I remember imagining how it would seem like a romantic depiction of a rural English wood in the autumn. It was only much more recently that I found out from a local historian that the place I stood was the location of the original Brockwell Hall, demolished in the 19th C prior to the construction of the current one. As the old hall was the venue for a court hearing under the reign of Elizabeth I, it must have been standing for more than 400 years. Now every time I pass the patch of grass where it stood I try to image what it might have looked like. No known illustrations survive. 2008.
