Large Skipper I
The year in which I began my Brockwell project was very poor for butterflies, with a wet cloudy summer depriving them of opportunities to feed. Nevertheless, the valuable habitat provided by the wild meadow continues to sustain grassland species that are otherwise fairly uncommon in London. Here, a large skipper rests on dry grass stem on a late summer evening. The larvae feed on grass, and the adults prefer wild grassland flowers to cultivated garden ones. 2008.
