Trinity Spire and Mammatus Clouds
Always on the lookout for good showers and thunderstorms, I was glad to see another facet of these very dynamic and variable clouds. The mammatus clouds (or mamma) are the result of cool and dense moist air in the base of the cumulonimbus cloud sinking in drops, giving an effect like hanging grapes or (as the name suggests) udders. They occur fairly often, but it takes quite low directional light to show them up. August 2009.
