Medlar Snow Scene
The snow-covered Orchard and Forest Garden, with the Upper Greenhouse in the background. The medlar (the tree in the foreground) is a largely forgotten fruit, native to Asia but grown in Europe for centuries and once commonplace here. The odd fruits, resembling giant rosehips are so hard that they must be left to partially decay before consumption, a little like quinces. A street in Camberwell is presumably named after one of these trees. January 2010.
