Jotunheimen Forest Floor I
In the pallid glow of midnight I discovered a rich white carpet of cauliflower-like reindeer moss in this area of alpine wood at the limits of the tundra. This lichen forms small balls of branching threads and is a major part of the reindeer’s diet. This photograph shows a little of the variety of plants and lichens that carpet the sparse forest, with needles and cones scattered over the spongy layers. May 2007.
