Algae, Lichens and Snow Pellets
The narrow Elan river near the mountain road to Aberystwyth features some of the most interesting geology in the area. The rapid flow from the surrounding hills has cut deep channels through the already convoluted sedimentary rock strata, which appear as narrow ridges. These river-moistened ridges have been colonised by green algae and dark moss as well as various coloured lichens, and over the course of the year these colours change considerably. In this winter image fine snow pellets have settled on the dark moss while the river flows in the background. December 2006.
