These quite mysterious northern ducks occur fairly frequently in the Elan Valley and are easiest to see in the early morning. This pair (the female is diving) was crossing the calm Garreg Ddu reservoir at dawn as I passed by, and unable to photographs them any closer, I decided to show them in the context of a typical mountainous habitat.
