Elephant Hawk
I have always been interested in hawkmoths, and often look for them when in suitable habitats. The British species are mostly quite scarce and difficult to find, but they include a few very colourful examples. The Elephant Hawk feeds on willowherb and the large brown caterpillars can sometimes be found on the stems in the day. They have coloured eye spots near the head which may help to scare predators. This adult was resting in long grass in the day and I placed it on these flowers for the photograph. Herefordshire, 2005
