The last remaining tract of the Great North Wood which formally covered much of the south east, now one of south London's most valuable wild forests and an important wildlife habitat.  The two halves are divided by the remnants of the Crystal Palace High Level railway line which once carried visitors to Sydenham's new cultural centre.  The working line was painted by Camille Pissarro during his time in south London.
